Distances

The technology streaming at us at the speed of light is enticing, adorable in its beguiling enticement of our sense of play. Under this layer of playfulness is the lingering suspicion it could be useful.
In practical terms it would be very useful, a visit to a work place could cost me $50.00 in fuel plus the wear and tear on my vehicle, this could be daily, weekly. To each student or site. The same exchange of information could be done daily, with all the other clients, over the broadband, for the same amount monthly.
In reality very few people in my area are able to take advantage of this. Dial-up is the norm and for those out on the fringes, even that is too unrealiable to be of use. Except for some cowsheds. The middle of winter does not even pretend to be cozy in a cowshed.
Cellphones, yes they are in evidence. There are places where if you drive up into the quarry, stand up on a ridge where you have clear line of sight up the coast, you can use your cell phone. Presents an interesting challenge to students, "What quarry did you do you literacy in?" Connect to dots was always a fun childhood occupation.
